Learning objectives

• Understand the ethos and value of public involvement and what it brings to health and social care research
• Understand the challenges of public involvement
• Know the importance of offering incentives, investing in the research team, and the practical commitment expected. Equally important will be learning the implications of not acting on these three issues
• Understand the difference between a lay researcher’s support needs and a professional researcher’s support needs
• Learn ways of incorporating user input to research activity at all stages of the research process
• Be able to explore roles and responsibilities of the research team
